Always loved this album, was 16 when I picked it up in '77, wauuh, many of these bands, my friends and me had never heard about. Now at the age of nearly 63 ,I still love it

Edited one year agoFantastic compilation but "New Wave" is a virtually meaningless description of what this contains. Which are mostly USA bands that inspired the punk movement. With token european exceptions from the Damned and the Boomtown rats. Also, I in the UK this had a sticker of the sort "pay no more than £2:45" (0r, similar).

Edited 2 years agoDoes anyone else have the large fluorescent pink poster advertising this? Mine came with the record but I always suspected it was a one-off from the shop and not a widescale issue. I'm happy to send a pic to anyone who is interested in seeing it.

...oh and on the back cover, blimey, second in from the left. I was never a 'punk' hated the term. I was more into Swell Maps and This Heat and Metabolist but would do anything for free beer. Little has changed.

That's me on the extreme left of the front cover, almost out of shot as I ought to be. A free booze up courtesy of Phonogram in Covent Garden to give them ammo for the cover. Skyhooks was my suggestion I'm sorry to it. Cally

The version of Richard Hell & the Voidoids "Love Comes In Spurts" found here is alternate version from the one on the Blank Generation LP. It was unique to this LP until the 2017 and the 40th Anniversary Edition of Blank Generation (which unfortunately sources the track from a pretty poor fidelity source).

Edited 6 years agoA companion album to Various - The Sire Machine Turns You Up, which came out at around the same time. Two different labels but sharing some of the same artists. (Ramones, Patti Smith, Dead Boys, Richard Hell & Faming Groovies appear on both). Never quite figured why that was.
Money was tight around 1978 so these two samplers served an important purpose.
It was great to hear The Ramones, Dead Boys, Richard Hell and Patti Smith from the US axis.... plus The Damned from the UK.
Like the Sire comp it's got a rare Patti Smith track on there and that has stood the test of time I think.
You've got your token Aussie band, an RnB French outfit and an earlier 70s, but influential, throw-back (Dolls).
Some of it's unessential, but in those days we took what we could get.
Those 'punks' on the back sleeve always looked a bit suspect to me. Did they come from central casting?
