Alright a thread was started a long time ago for music not on FAX for people wanting to find FAX-like music outside the label, but it was rather ill-fated so I'm starting one that will hopefully become a great resource. So to start off here is a list other cult labels that have been mentioned by the FAX community over the years as worth following as well:
Anodize: Great new ambient label that issues releases in tin cases. Definitely one to watch...
Here post any news or releases you recommend that would interest fans of FAX. I'll continually update these first posts. -
Kracker modificato over 12 years ago
Ok here's THE RULE: Everything non-FAX goes here.
Post it here, trust me, IT WILL BE SEEN by us forum goers interested in outside label releases and this thread will usually be at the top of the forum. Make a thread advertising stuff not FAX, expect it to be gone. This is NOT general electronic forum, there are plenty of those that I assume are free to use as advertising space. Think of this as a forum for people who want ONLY FAX discussions and everything else filtered out and this is a special thread is for people who are looking for music recommended if you like FAX. The only exception to the rule is if the thread happens to call for a lengthy discussion in the interest of the community but I imagine that will be rare.
Ebay sales threads are ok, just like on the old FAXlist, but expect the thread gone well after the sales have expired and no threads announcing that you've listed stuff on Discogs, please. -

Agree with you Kracker and hope people will discover those labels and releases. Also Sending Orbs are back with a great new album collaboration album: Kettel & Secede - When Can.
http://www.sendingorbs.com/
Added a few labels to your list and hope people will check these labels out too:
R.I - Not sure if Rather Interesting will continue as it was a sub label run by Pete Namlook for Atom Tm's output - a brilliant label it is too! well worth looking into for those who might have missed it's limited print releases before.
http://discogs.mejorespelis.org/label/Rather+Interesting
Binemusic - has released some great releases inc albums by Move D, Lars Leonhard, Sven Schienhammer (aka Quantec), Scanner, Marconi Union..etc. Everything form ambient, dub-techno, Idm, downtempo, techno and everything in-between is released, all quality. Recent albums have had a new recognizable art look - as with FAX's iconic art on PS/PW albums. Making each release that extra special.
http://www.binemusic.de/
Silent Season - from Canada with cool digi distinguishable art work, with excellent releases across ambient, dub-techno, techno, Idm, experimental - should appeal to FAX followers, Quality releases by Mind Over Midi, Fatih Tuter, Djorvin Clain, ASC, Alteria Percepsyne, Mindspan...etc. Worth checking out.

Also if into dub-techno/ambient/downtempo you might want to investigate the excellent ZeECc label with some strong album releases by The Nautilus Project, Dublicator, joergmueller, Mr. Cloudy, Xoki & Hieronymus

Actualy, SO just released a Kettel & Secede collaboration album. http://www.sendingorbs.com/
Great music.
Nice use of vocals; sparse, ethereal. Far more palatable than those on a recent release by a former SO artist.
Different look/style cover art by Jeroen Advocaat than what he's done on SO in the past.

Apollo: When R&S Records received Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works, their reaction was to launch an ambient sub-label , Apollo.
The 'new' R&S Apollo incarnation isn't purely ambient, however.
Weak, skittery dubsteppy stuff and lukewarm downtempo; total Teflon.
Wouldn't recommend any of the new stuff to anyone.
A couple of years ago they even put out a rock act on the Apollo offshoot. -

...also Makyo _ a artist I was so hoping for Namlook to maybe one day be able to collaborate with. Makyo's music crosses Ambient, Classical, Acid, Eastern influences, Techno, Dub and Downetempo - can relate with Fax PS releases and certain Namlook's collaboration and his solo work.
Personally never been disappointed with his Makyo releases.
FAX fans should look into his other project: Pasana (S/T) album. 3 tracks of beautiful deep trance, classical, gorgeous ambient. A great album that reminds me of those special moments from PS/PW/PK FAX albums: Zenith, Air, Sultan, Electro Harmonix, Second Nature, Sea Biscuit.

Just listened to the five Ultimae albums recently picked up. Think a lot of FAX listeners may be interested in this label. Very polished deep varied music genres and ambient on the albums below. Nice distinguishable collection look to the albums (which was what originally attracted and interested me to FAX label and music).
AES DANA - Pollen
SYNC24 -Source
SYNC24- Comfortable Void
CARBON BASED LIFEFORMS - Twentythree
CONNECT.OHM - 9980
...also Binemusic which I've also been going through, and have re-discovered some FAX related listening moods and atmosphere with ambient and music across different genres. Recommended below releases:
BENJAMIN BRUNN - König Und Drache
MOVE D + BENJAMIN BRUNN* - Let's Call It A Day
MOVE D - 10/11 - Live At Johanneskirche
MOVD D - Tonspuren 1-10
ANDO (4) - Habitat
SCANNER - Rockets, Unto The Edges Of Edges
MARCONI UNION - Tokyo
SVEN SCHIENHAMMER - Altostratus Translucidus
LARS LEONHARD - 1549
Released on the excellent Dial label. A Collaboration between Pantha Du Prince and Stephan Abry fusing ambient + accousrtic-electronica-techno with a very FAX feel to it (Silence, Virtua Vices, Air)
URSPRUNG S/T

Awesome stuff Mick. I'll be looking forward to 'Igloo Retold' next year and mention how good it is whenever i get it
Yeah 12k is a big cult label but there's a lot of experimental, glitchy, minimal releases to have to dig through. He had a collaboration with Tetsu Inoue on 12k that was just ear-shattering.
I'm liking the the Kettel / Secede from [Invalid Label] but it seems like something that was in the can for awhile and they finally got the label up and running enough to release it. But they're still not back to releasing established artists again.
As for Elektrolux since rebranding as Elux Records they haven't really released anything good among the one release a year they managed to put out -

Just released my Departure [First Class Edition] Compilation on bandcamp
20 tracks, covering Ambient, IDM,Downtempo, Techno and beyond..
info:
In 2009 I released my second EP "Departure" for Irish based Techno label Nice and Nasty now in their 20th year.Nice and Nasty are better known for their more dancefloor friendly cuts so the title "Departure" seemed more than fitting for the release that consisted of four "Chill Out" or "Downtempo" electronic music tracks that ranged from elements of Jazz to soundtrack inspired ambience to bleepy and bass driven frequencies.
Shortly after the release of the original EP a collection of remixes followed, a remix EP of each track every three months which saw the likes of Finlands IDM master Lackluster turning out a couple of rather stunning glitchy yet emotive remixes.
Dave Anderson [Ferox] Showing of his distinct freestyle keyboard playing style amongst some funky yet minimal grooves.Tomas Jirku's remix went off on a really deep musical and majestic vibe.
Ireland's new techno shinning light The Parellel turned out a solid chunk of abstract electro which got some airplay on Dave Clarke's White Noise radio show and UK based IDM/Classical
veteran Pentatonik delivered an epic cinematic remix of The Final Storm.

A album recently picked up as a follower of Pantha-Du-Prince music. Pantha-Du-Prince collaborates to excellent effect with Norwegian musicians The Bell Laboratory. So do I mate :) Unfortunately many labels are doing the limited CD runs purely on an economics level, 200 + CD's can be risky for ambient music unless you are Bvdub or
Ulrich Schnauss or someone.. We are looking towards some decent labels at the moment though, hopefully someone who is clued in to Fax etc and are willing to invest in a proper release will happen soon..

Hi guys.I'd like to inform everyone that we unfortunately will have to do CDR's instead of typical glassmaster cd's for all releases this year on our labels. These will be done at two professional companies in London.I am adamant to keep the quality of our product high even thou money is very tight in our label of late. We've had two done last year and theif flawless in sound and quality. We will always keep releasing on a CD format on our labels as this is imho the only way to listen to music properly ie on a CD system.CD prices will stay at €10.99 due to postage increases and that our releases are on Jewelcases so more expensive to post.If you are anti cdr for some reason maybe digital is the best option. We will have Lorenzo's album and all other releases available from the psychonavigation.bandcamp.com site. If someone who ordered Lorenzo's album recently wants a refund please mail us if you dont want to but are annoyed then a discount on your next Psychonavigation purchase can be arranged. Thanks guys.Keith -

Just thinking here : In an ideal world I'd press say 300 glassmaster if we knew we could sell them all (get that amount of pre-orders) but figures like this are not achieveable I'm afraid to say.Maybe things will change sometime soon who knows... -
Mostra questo messaggio
Of course glassmaster is better, but I will take CDR over digital any day. -
Mostra questo messaggio
There's no way you're going near 300 sold out in preorders. That just never happens. And if you accomplished that then you made too few copies because now a lot people who slept through the pre-order stage or catch on to Montana's stuff later are SOL. Unlike a majority of Psychonavigation's roster, Montana is an established artist and the music is probably rock solid so I don't see why the lack in confidence in this release. -
Mostra questo messaggio
Ahem there's no lack of confidence in the album!! These days of selling 300 copies of an ambient/electronic album through a independent label are generally non existent. It really is a very tough job indeed. With under three months to go we have well under 100 pre-orders thus far so yep 300 is totally unobtainable and a glass master is not an option I'm afraid unless there's a miracle :) Praise the lord there will be!
-
Kracker modificato over 12 years ago
I see labels (besides FAX) sell through 300 copies all the time these days, but for 'blockbuster' artists like Mick Chillage, Ishq, the latest bvdub sold out fast I was lucky to get a copy (they're repressing tho) And so you're saying that unless you're able to secure the sales of all 300 copies well before release date that would be wind up being a financial loss for that release, as opposed to what a label normally did, sell a huge chunk of the run right after the release date which pays for the CD order and the rest is sold in the coming years netting profit for the artist and label? And a lot people aren't going to pre-order months in advance because they're giving money now instead of when the CD ships and also because of paypal's moneyback limitation. It's why i didn't want to pre-order in the first place as well as the fact that i don't normally purchase from individual labels. I usually just purchase everything in one package from FAX, and other labels, from the US distributor (ear-rational) here to save shipping costs. but the price was nice so I was like what the hell. But the release has barely been up for pre-order a month and the release isn't until the beginning of summer and 300 copies of a hit artist already seems like a bad idea? Just curious and all -

I really appreciate you told us all on this forum that you have no intention of ing individual artists or labels! Cheers for the :(

Sorry for my typos there. On a mobile phone here. Also sorry if me not buying my CDs individually and directly from your label and going through my US distributor shop (since I buy from many other labels as well not just yours) means I'm somehow not ing your label. -

"I see labels (besides FAX) sell through 300 copies all the time these days"
Explain how you know this please kracker?? You work for these labels do you?
Maybe inside information eh :)
Did you ever think that a small label like ours has to give out free cd's so not all those 300 manufactured are sold?

You do realize that small labels like yours have these things called websites? They post information on their releases such as 'limited to 300' and 'sorry all sold out', you know, 'inside' information of that nature.
Ok look I asked some legitimate questions because i was curious and obviously you don't want to answer them so sorry for being a bother -

Now come on Kracker please don't be a smart hole! We're all watching you!
Legitimate questions? Your kidding me aren't you? Maybe after you've run a record label for 13 years on the smallest budget ever and god willing you do your best to try and keep positive when little "Krackers" try to put you down then come back to me!! -

Cool artwork by Advocaat as usual, probably very good music, no doubt. It's a shame that it is CDr and why we have to wait till May, if you already got it in your office? -

LOL!! because that's the release date :)

Excellent! It looked like his work. And yes it is a shame that such a quailty collectible has to be CDr. -

Krap, I hope it isn't because of my provider's stupid spam filter. If it's a track off the album, that's alright. I can wait until the album arrives. Did you actually send the mp3 IN the email or post a temporary link to the mp3? -

Yes it was attached in the email. Not to worry. -

Play nice, guys. We're all on the same team here. Most of us are the few remaining physical CD buyers out there. So, labels: don't diss your customers, they are always right! Buyers: the labels!
I see nothing wrong at all with buying through retail or distribution (i.e. Ear/Rational). If a label is somehow not making enough off of distribution sales, they need to rethink their distribution network! Personally, I hate buying from labels as it's too much to keep track of, and individual shipping costs are too high, seeing as how I buy around a thousand CDs a year.
Also: CD-Rs == icky. There's not as much collectibility value in CD-Rs and their shelf-life is waaaay lower than pressed CDs. All those CD-Rs will be junk in 10 years. Of course, like already said, CD-Rs are better than digital. I've never bought a digital release in my life. Call me old-skool.

I agree with you, Trevor. I much prefer buying from retailers, either online (NO AMAZON!), but preferably bricks & mortar, though that is a diminishing option. For the first time in 20 years, a major record store will open in NYC, actually Brooklyn, in June. That's 10,000 square foot Rough Trade store. Can't wait for that. For me it's CDs-good, records-good, cassettes-good, CDRs-just OK and digitial-no thanks.
