Discogs allows sales with local pick up but it must be paid by Paypal. The buyer then comes and gets the record and I mark the order as "Shipped". I've done this many times. There is a potential problem here though. The buyer could make a claim and say they didn't pick up the record even though they did. How can you prove to Paypal that the buyer actually got the record? Shouldn't Discogs have another option when updating an order that says "Picked Up" instead of having to click on "Shipped"?

Should Discogs create a form to print and have the buyer sign at pickup? Should I be taking a video of them picking up the record.

This is another loophole in the Discogs/Paypal agreement.

There is no PayPal Seller Protection for local pickup (at least in the US) so it’s on you if you decide to allow it

You could PayPal to find out what would satisfy their “proof” requirements in this article

    https://www.paypal.com/us/legalhub/paypal/seller-protection

“The shipping requirement does not apply to eligible transactions involving items that you deliver in person; provided, however, that you agree to provide us with alternative evidence of delivery or such additional documentation or information relating to the transaction that we may request.”

Do what you need to do to prove they were there and that you put the record in their hands.

You could reasonably require a valid ID and take a picture of it with the item being picked up

Thanks for the suggestions. It would be rare for a buyer to try to scam this way but it is possible. It's something that Discogs and Paypal should work out.

You could make a special receipt that includes the Discogs order information and some text at the bottom saying something like "Picked up by [name of buyer] on [blank space for date to be filled in when picked up]: [space for buyer's signature]". If the buyer then makes a PayPal claim you can scan or photograph that signed receipt and show it to PayPal.

It would be nice if the available order status option was "Picked Up" instead of "Shipped" when Local Pickup is the chosen "shipping" option though. Would make sense.

They need to establish how many buyers use a local pick-up option. My calculations, based on the mileage of my car, is that any round-trip over 20 miles is more cost-effective to be mailed than picked up.

I forget the exact name of it since it has been a while since I had someone do a local pickup after buying on Discogs, but there is an option that says something along the lines of "Doesn't need to be shipped". You choose that, and then what I do that PayPal confirmed would cover me, is to take a picture of their ID with the item or receipt of item and get a quick signature from them on something that says that they got the item they wanted as well as had a chance to inspect it and were satisfied. I then keep the photo and photo of what I had them sign in a folder in case it is ever needed.

It would be nice if PayPal did what eBay does for local pickup though and require a PIN that the buyer is sent and then the seller enters into the sale to prove that the buyer was the one who picked it up.

This would be amazing, and would likely cause me to use local pick-up a lot more. Of course, with local pick-up Discogs misses out on collecting their shipping fee.

For clarity, Discogs charge their 9% on the sales amount + the shipping charged, but they do not take a separate shipping fee.

You can read up on local pick-up here https://.discogs.mejorespelis.org/hc/en-us/articles/360013553737-Shipping-Policies-Glossary

The option allows buyers to pay for their order and pick it up in your store or your location. This is a checkbox that applies alongside any additional methods.

Whatever you need to tell yourself to accept it. It's six, or one half dozen of another.
