Reviews
-
There is something more absolute than any other absolute, and it's the fact that the mono mixes of Ramones' first album are superior and should have been used from the get go.
The strict stereo separation of the original mix sounds terrible on the radio. It sounds terrible in your bedroom. It sounds terrible on a PA. They shot themselves in the foot.
Maybe the only equal fuck up in 70s rock history is David Bowie's abysmal mix of Raw Power by the Stooges. Thank thee gods Iggy eventually rectified that.
And thank thee gods for the Ramones mono mixes...better late than never. Of course, there are [deaf and deranged] people who think Bowie's mix is just fine. Don't trust those people as far as you can throw them.
The only reason to listen to the stereo versions is nostalgia. If you had only ever heard the mono version, there is no way you would think, "Yeah, that sounds great. But what about a stereo mix with hard panning, strict separation of the instruments?" Not a chance.
There's a reason they finally released a mono mix. It's better. -
The mono mix is very interssting, you got a fuller sound, but it has a lot of treble sometimes. The original mix, even in its unique way, sounds more natural. The remastered version of the original mix is the one i like the most.
-
The sound of the mono mix is very disappointing. The vocal have a lot of distortion especially on the song "Now I wanna sniff some glue" :(

Edited 2 years agoA seriously awesome release. I'll never go back to listening to this classic another way. The mono sounds crazy good and Dee-Dee's counting before each song makes this the definitive release of this album. I've yet to check out the bonus discs, but the mono vinyl LP is worth the price of the set alone.
2023 edit: this release is more fatiguing on my ears than I recall. Treble-heavy for sure. I’ll need to track down the previous remastered LP’s to see how they compare. -
Sounds amazing! I love the mix on the vinyl. Starting each song with Dee Dee classic count off. The bonus material is so much fun! Defenitly worth the money
