"Sweet Maria" is an absolute treasure. It starts off shakey and Shaggsy, and at first you think, I don't know about this. Then the chorus comes in, truly from another dimension, the rhythm of the strumming and singing completely its own thing, the thing that is peculiarly unique to the talents of the Wiggin sisters, the thing that compels repeated listens, because it has a centering effect. And this is one of their best songs. Lord knows how it was selected to learn and record, with lyrics addressed to a mistress named Maria, to be sung by harmonizing sisters - a favorite song of their father Austin's? This track would've been right at home on "Shaggs' Own Thing" - The Shaggs' secret best album.
