This is one that would make a good 7” 45!

Roxanne Shanté is one of my favourite rappers from this era, and Marly Marl packs so much punch from his beats, scratches and samples. Everything is rugged, raw and uncompromising; the combination is a winner. I particularly love the fact a lot of the early Shanté rhymes just go and go, with no padded chorus structure to interrupt the flow.

One interesting aspect to this track, is that the beatboxing climbs from 98bpm to 106bpm. You'd have expected Biz Markie to use a click-track to remain in time. But hey, this is what provides so much character to productions from this period!
