Released in September 1977
The Stranger is Billy Joel's the fifth studio album by American singer Billy Joel, released in September 1977 by Columbia Records.
From it's initial release through to July '78 it kept the radio airwaves happy with a supply of singles, starting with "Just the Way You Are" inspired by Joel's love for his wife at the time, Elizabeth Weber the melody came to him in a dream while he was working on The Stranger, which I've always found similar to "I'm Not In Love by 10cc,probably down to the overlapping harmonies and the Fender Rhodes piano,I love both these tracks, originally Joel considered keeping the song off the album, dismissing it as a "gloppy ballad" that was out-of-place compared to the rest of the album, producer Phil Ramone disagreed, and brought Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow into the studio to prove that it was worth including, upon hearing the song, the two artists both praised it, thus convincing him to feature the song.
Next we have "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)" released November 1977, followed by "The Stranger" released: May 1978,
"Only the Good Die Young" released: May 1978 and finally "She's Always a Woman" released: July 1978
The Stranger was the first of Joel's albums to be produced by Ramone, with whom he would work for five subsequent albums and I've always seen the album as the first in a trilogy, continuing with 52nd Street(1978) and finishing with Glass Houses(1980).
