When I first purchased this album, I found their use of vocals in two songs to be jarring and at strong variance with Windham Hill's instrumental reputation. I overlooked that Shadowfax was undertaking increasingly complex compositions. Chuck Greenberg and his bandmates could have sat on their reputation as Windham Hill's premier artist. Instead, they continued to grow and change.
I do not know what caused them to leave Windham Hill for EMI after this album, but it may have been this. Perhaps they no longer wanted to be defined by the restrained Windham Hill aesthetic. Perhaps it was achieving commercial success 14 years after they had formed. Maybe EMI offered them more money. In any case, Too Far to Whisper is the key Shadowfax album.
