Having discovered Crooked Necks after someone made me a copy of Frail's Something Must Break 12" Ep covering Joy Division songs (I went out and eventually bought my own copy of this limited piece of vinyl) I bought this cassette without hesitation. Alright Is Exactly What It Isn't LP from 2011 is another great album by Crooked Necks in my collection so I knew this tape had a lot going for it without having to listen to it before purchasing it. These songs definitely have more of a shoe-gaze sound instead of some of the black metal stuff that Frail and Toil has put out. "Faded Flourescents" is more in line with the material off of the Alright is Exactly What It Isn't LP. There are still the drowned screeching black metal vocals buried underneath the guitars, bass and drums that fans of the gengre have come to expect. The j-card insert is made up a nice green glittering paper and also includes a fold out insert of images. I wish some printed lyrics were included as I have no idea what's being sung on this cassette. The running time of this cassette is very short which is quite fine as the tape is being sold at a very affordable price and I find myself listening to both sides without the thought of ever fast forwarding. Not one track on this cassette jumps out at me but at the same time they all seem to catch my attention. I can't pretend to know a lot about this genre of music so it's hard for me to compare it to any other artists as I would have never known about this band if it hadn't been for the friend of mine who knew that I'm a huge Joy Division fan to record me the Something Must Break EP by Frail. Something about Frail's way of covering JD's songs stood out among the large number of Joy Division covers out there in the music world. It usually works out that way, if like a band enough I will end up digging deeper to see other releases and project so now I can say I am a fan of Frail, Toil and Crooked Necks. I look forward to future releases.
