Instantaneous success (they reached Billboard third position with their debut album and heavy rotation on MTV with the first video) condemns Stone Temple Pilots to be considered as a band expressly created to benefit from the success of Seattle bands - especially because of their geographical origin (California) and the vaguely glossy atmosphere of their music making them as a sort of strangers in the alternative world created in Washington state. Adored by the masses, but slighted by fanatics of hardship and uneasiness reigning in Seattle, Stone Temple Pilots were artistically underestimated, because many people do not understand Scott Weiland coloured theatricality neither the psychedelic power of their music, heir of Jane’s Addiction crossover. In addition to a noticeable grunge component shared with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, in Stone Temple Pilots music there is a kaleidoscopic psych mood, identifiable in the stratified guitar melodies by Dean De Leo, in which metal heaviness cohabits with psychedelic reflexes. Thanks to the dynamic rhythmic session, entrusted to the other De Leo brother (Robert, bass) and to Eric Kretz (drums), in Core Stone Temple Pilots release a great energy, ridden and dominated by Scott Weiland voice. Depth, power and warmth of his voice will be so much belittled by the critics up to the point of being considered just as an emulation of Vedder, Cobain and Staley capabilities. Yet, with the following album, Weiland will have the opportunity to show that his great capabilities are even ed by a strong personality. Core does not revolutionize 90s rock music, yet it has the right to be considered as one the most intense and significant opus of that era.
