Joe Bonamassa is one of those musicians that are at their best in a live environment, so going through his extensive live catalogue is a worthy task, an early highlight being his 2009's "Live From The Royal Albert Hall"- one of Bonamassa's finest moments to date.

2012's "Beacon Theatre - Live From New York" saw Joe presenting his latest -at the time- studio album "Dust Bowl".

This one is a jolly good, enjoyable double live album. Bonamassa was presenting one of his finest studio efforts, and his star was on the rise- you can tell that in his confidence and powerful stage presence all across the performance- so the guy was really ablaze here.

The 20 songs here contained are divided between originals and covers and, even if the originals would already be making up for a great gig, it's the covers that make the difference here, as most of them are performed together with illustrious guests such as Beth Hart, Paul Rodgers or John Hiatt that help rising the bar to new heights.

Because if I have to make one criticism it is that IMHO Joe's voice has never been his best asset causing some songs, like his take on Rory Gallagher's "Cradle Rock", sound a little "tamed" overall in comparison with the originals, or with how a great vocalist would deal with them.

Of course, Joe's guitar playing- and the whole band- are on fire all across the recording, and will compensate for any lack of vocal genius, but it's when Hart, Hiatt or Rodgers grab the mic when the thing reaches higher levels, and their takes on "Sinner's Prayer", "Fire And Water" and, specially, Hart's heartbreaking performance of the classic "I'll Take Care Of You" are something to witness, and I still believe they are the true highlights here.

Together with originals like the wonderful "Mountain Time" or the stone-heavy "Slow Train", covers like Gary Moore's "Midnight Blues" or Leonard Cohen's "Bird On A Wire", plus genius instrumental performances by Joe and the band, they give shape to a great live album from one of the finest contemporary blues rock guitar players.
