Edited 19 years agoThis release was my introduction to the Pixies. Together with Doolittle, it reflects the epitome of the attitude and skillful songwriting of the band at its peak.
Starting out with the big-beat Bone Machine, we get the classic Black Francis holler, the off-kilter harmonies between Kim and Frank, and the not-too-serious rock the Pixies created.
The album flows throughout very consistently (the most consistent Pixies release, imo) and the driving basslines and drums offset Joe's signature lead guitar sounds that gave the Pixies its defining sound. Fast, somewhat eclectic Latin influences, and clever lyrical content make this my favorite Pixies album.
