David Lee Roth may not be the greatest rock n' roll singer, but he's the most fun. However, as with his stint in Van Halen, his lounge lizard/vaudeville tendencies work best when they're flanked by more orthodox rock approaches. When that balance is achieved - as on "Yankee Rose", "Goin' Crazy", and the superb "Big Trouble" -- the results are fantastic. When it's not, as on the overlong disco indulgence of "Ladies Nite in Buffalo?" or the pointless Sinatra cover "That's Life", you get tracks that are not boring but still skip-worthy. The mind-bending Steve Vai, one guitarist who could match EVH at his own game, is an enormous asset here.
Great tracks: Yankee Rose, Goin' Crazy, Big Trouble
Good tracks: Shyboy, Tobacco Road, Elephant Gun, Bump and Grind
Mediocre tracks: I'm Easy, Ladies Nite in Buffalo?
Bad/filler tracks: That's Life
