Notes

There are two versions of this release, this one and a later repress. Both versions were released in a generic black outer sleeve with a braille sticker on one side (reading "gescom ep ska #03") and a black & white A4 size insert sheet with the text: "Atavistic Rhythms For Beat Freaks".
The only difference between the two is that the repress has a mirrored central label on the B/D-side (see the images posted there).

It was all about Mag for me back in the day as it was the kind of tripped out, minimalist space funk that I'd hear upstairs at Bugged Out at Sankeys in the mid 90s. It's inclusion on the Coldcut JDJ mix didn't do it any harm either. Classic.

An excellent double-bill by Gescom here. The orchestral breaks banger "Snackwitch" and the trip hop licker "Mag" make this EP worthwhile!

Not very crucial listening, sounds for the most part like leftover Autechre tunes, not good enough to fit on their Warp albums.

Is the vocal sample on "Mag" coming from Fantasy Three's ‎"It's Your Rock" Instrumental?

The sample in 'Mag' originates with the much loved drums from Melvin Bliss 'Synthetic Substitution', as used by the Ultra MAGnetic-Mc's (geddit?). Its great to see how far things travel... On a gripe note, it would be helpful if sellers could pay attention to listing headers & stop trying to sell the re-issue in the 1st pressing section- black sleeve & sticker = second pressing... Pain in the ass.

These two tracks sound really sample-heavy and hiphop-influenced, and they aren't much like what Booth/Brown were doing as Autechre at the time. Really raw and really good, more engaging and energetic than the first Gescom EP for me - (of course the packaging isn't as cool). To my ears, the first side sounds better at 33 RPM: at this speed it reminds me of a much rawer take on "Maphive 6.1" from Ae ep7.

What I love so much about EP2 is that it was a sudden departure from EP1. That's what you should expect from Gescom in their further releases for them to take the road less traveled and to do it so well.

Simple breaks get pummeled into a collage of textures like so much shattered glass. Starts out slow and funky, gets evil in no time flat. Essential.
