Edited 4 years agoWould of been a good album if Vincent crane hadn't erased john Canns vocals and replaced them with the awful Pete French. Nice cover though.

U.S. pressings added the single "DEVIL'S ANSWER" to this release. It may be included in some other countries as well.

One day I bunked off school, went to Brighton and purchased two second hand records. Both of these would now rank in my all-time top five, so I don't think my education suffered too much for it. A scratchy Warrior on the Edge of Time by Hawkwind was one (£2.50) while the other was this album, costing the princely sum of £4.00, about four packets of fags in those days. This was produced when they were at their commercial peak, with Devil's Answer riding high in charts. Firstly, the cover merits a mention, as it was drawn by Roger Dean, although unlike any other cover he ever did. A doddery old granny is shocked and stunned to discover four long-haired hippies inside her ear trumpet. The album is a mixed bag of honky-tonk piano, introspective ballads, hard rockers and just an inkling of what was to come on the next couple of albums. Side two is a rollercoaster ride of melancholy laced with hard rocking hammond action.
Released on Pegasus (a short-lived B & C offshoot) in the UK, I also have a copy of the American version on Elektra. This has a slightly different cover, but more importantly, a version of Devil's Answer with Pete French on vocals.
Sadly this version of the Roosters barely lasted the summer, and they were soon ed by former Colosseum frontman Chris Farlowe to commit commercial suicide with two great sounding prog-soul classics, Made in England and Nice n Greasy (IV if you have the US version). These two are fairly rare, especially the denim cover version of MIE, so these will set you back a tidy sum. Even the less rare In Hearing Of seems to go for silly money these days.
