VNV Nation needs no introduction here. With "Of Faith Power And Glory" they are releasing their seventh studio album, if, for a moment, we do not consider the rerelease of "Advance And Follow". The band has built themselves a solid reputation with their outstanding live performances and their heroic electro that does not shy away from the big questions in life. "Of Faith Power And Glory" is, as the title already suggests, no exception to this approach.
The album opens with a short instrumental track, "Pro Victoria", that must be their most bombastic and martial intro so far. This is followed by nine tracks and some 50 minutes of excellent music. Songs like "Sentinel" and "Where There Is Light" are incredibly uplifting and heroic. Tracks like "The Great Divide" and "Ghost" on the other hand will stimulate introspection. Both music and lyrics manage to deal with themes such as mortality and transience in an incomparable way.
Luckily there are also tracks that might well become popular on the dancefloors this summer. Other than aforementioned "Sentinel" the track "Art Of Conflict" just _pounds_ away. And songs like "Defiant" and "Verum Æternus" outright rock, if only for the way the drums are employed. And of course there is the obligatory sentimental ballad, "From My Hands", which might well be their best so far. As always with VNV Nation, I don't find them melodramatic. The lyrics are simply too well thought out and too honest for that. Recognisable, painful and incredibly beautiful.
Again VNV Nation manages to touch on a wide range of emotions in one single album; aggression, heroic sentiments, euphoria, but also introspection and intense grief. After giving this album a couple of spins I am completely sold. They remain an incredible band and this album reminds me why that was. For me it ranks right up there with my other personal favourite, "Futureperfect". Fans can purchase this one blindly.
