Steely Dan's debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill (1972), introduced the world to a sound that defied easy categorization. Emerging from the burgeoning singer-songwriter scene, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker crafted an album that blended elements of jazz, rock, pop, and even R&B, creating a sophisticated and subtly subversive sonic landscape.
While the band would later become known for their meticulous studio perfectionism, Can't Buy a Thrill retains a youthful energy and a sense of playful experimentation. The album features a mix of vocalists, including David Palmer, who handles lead vocals on several tracks, and Donald Fagen, whose distinctive voice would become a defining characteristic of the band's later work.
The album's ten tracks showcase a remarkable range of styles, from the infectious groove of "Do It Again" and the bluesy swagger of "Reelin' in the Years" to the introspective balladry of "Dirty Work" and the soulful "Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me)." The instrumental work is tight and impressive, with guitarists Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Denny Dias delivering memorable solos and intricate riffs.
Can't Buy a Thrill is an album that has aged remarkably well. Its blend of musical genres, sophisticated arrangements, and cryptic lyrics continues to resonate with listeners today. While it may lack the sonic perfection of later Steely Dan albums, it captures a band on the cusp of greatness, brimming with talent and ambition. It's a snapshot of a specific time and place, reflecting the cultural shifts of the early 1970s while laying the foundation for one of the most distinctive and enduring catalogs in rock history. -
Ok so if you want the best sounding pressing of this album outside of the UHQR these are the ones:
- 1973 A-1/B-1 repress on ABC's short lived Children's Blocks label design, supposedly used better quality vinyl than the original releases.
- 1974 Pitman reissue on target label, 1st variant I believe
- MCA Coral reissue, or any with deadwax ending in "W1" on Side 1 and "W2" on Side 2 -
