I wasn't sure what to make of Homegrown at first, it's quite short (35 minutes) and seemed like a bit of a mess initially - certainly not up there with the LPs that would've bookended it if it had been issued as intended in 1975 (it was recorded between On The Beach and Zuma). But it's definitely a grower - sometimes dark, often weird, and quite experimental in parts - and I'm left wishing Neil had released more records as unapologetically idiosyncratic as this one.

Fun and affordable album, even though not the best in Young's catalogue (as was to be expected). Great pressing. Kind of a shame that the record is in the lyric sleeve. I used an additional polylined sleeve to avoid damage.

To me, this album is an illustration of what mixing and mastering mean. Everything is perfectly balanced. The electric bass and double bass are deep but not overpowering. It’s punchy as Hell. The drums are never fatiguing, it brings the touch of swing you need.
On the other side of the spectrum, the high notes aren’t too bright, they do not pierce your ear. Neil Young’s harp doesn’t hiss when you turn the volume up. For a comparision, take Dylan’s Freewheelin’. When you play it loud, there’s sibilance on every high note.
The mids are also terrific and the guitars play right there in front of you.
A great collection of songs, certainly not the best album in Young’s career (but hey, what can you do when you’ve recorded and released something as perfect as Harvest ?!), but this version is a perfect way of listening to it. -

Incredibly disappointed by my pressing. Big pit in the vinyl surface on side A making the first track essentially unplayable.
