Edited one year agoA perfect album, the one where Leon tips his hand as an auteur. An audio verite approach prevails, with varying styles, instrumental textures, technologies and production values serving to set up each song as different scenes in a movie. There's the piano-driven full band numbers you expect from LR, but also things that feel like inspired home demoes and experimental snippets with drum machine, synth, clavinet, and Chamberlain. Along with the high-quality of the songs themselves, the stylistic and sound variety make for a great listen.
Celebrity is the main focus lyrically. Introspective numbers like This Masquerade, My Cricket, Magic Mirror and Tight Rope, address doubt, loneliness, and identity in a mature way that manages to stay free of the solipsism of many 70s singer-songwriters. How did Leon pull it off? I think it's cuz he tempered introspection with blues, jazz, country, rock, soul and Tin Pan Alley pop, much in the same way Randy Newman and Nilsson did. I also don't think he was too precious about himself (watch the scene with Leon and Eric Andersen, an actual singer-songwriter, in A Poem Is A Naked Person for shits and giggles on this point).
Out and out rockers like Out In The Woods and Queen of The Roller Derby are artfully reigned in by sublimely homey production. If The Shoe Fits is Comedy to Magic Mirror's Tragedy (but even this has some smartly funny lines).
LR describes the hazards of fame. Over the next few years, he'd begin a slow retreat from it. -
who would've thought that one of the best Chamberlin albums of all time would be a Leon Russell release! absolutely love this version of "This Masquerade" though the Carpenters version is quite good as well
