I figured i should at least review this as ive owned a copy for a number of years now. Its a wonderful album and it was recorded raw with little concession to top mastering. The house band sound is what makes Al Green and Anne Peebles unique so it doesnt matter too much.
Initially i had the black vinyl pressing of this one and hated it for the surface noise. I could live with the rather muffled mids and top end though. So i went for this one and prayed and mercy me the playback is alot better. Very quiet throughout. Due to the nature of this recording and mastering a little surface noise is less noticable on this record than many but still the green cut is much better than the black. I figured this copy will suffice.
But not long after buying this, id seen the Japanese made a 2019 RSD cut ltd to 200 copies for Europe/US... YEAH, SILLY RARE. Not only this but also rumoured to be AAA from the tapes. Well im sorry to say the green VMP is relegated into a rather muffled 2nd place. The 2019 Jap pressing is clearly the way this record is meant to be heard for better or worse. Its sad they only made 200 and im sad i cant afford to wear it out so i shall keep the VMP for more casual listens/guests etc.
This is still a decent press and this remaster is widely available. It still has lushness, warmth and low end but it rolls off the top and mutes the mids alot (presumably to hide the tapes shortcomings). If you can get a quiet copy its worth going for. -
