Masayoshi Takanaka - “The Rainbow Goblins” (1981) is a true masterpiece of fusion and psychedelic rock. Released by the Japanese label Kitty Records, this conceptual album, inspired by the children’s book of the same name, tells a magical and fantastical story through music.
The first thing that stands out is the stunning sound quality—masterful production captures every detail of Takanaka’s rich arrangements. Electric guitars intertwine with synthesizers, while the rhythm section provides an incredibly vibrant energy. Takanaka explores diverse musical styles, seamlessly blending jazz, rock, and funk with Japanese precision, making every track a unique experience.
The album is known for its rich dynamics—ranging from tranquil, atmospheric ages to vibrant, high-energy instrumental sections. Its exceptional musical storytelling makes it feel like a movie without visuals, where each track is a new chapter in the story.
For vinyl collectors and audiophiles, “The Rainbow Goblins” is a must-have. The vinyl’s recording quality is exceptional, delivering an immersive sound with deep bass and crystal-clear highs. The gatefold release highlights attention to detail, both visually and sonically.
For fans of jazz, psychedelia, or fusion, this album will be a gem in any collection. Masayoshi Takanaka demonstrates the full extent of his artistic brilliance here, creating a timeless work that impresses both technically and emotionally. -
