Edited 2 years agoOver half of the tunes selected for this release were played by The Freestylers on their Radio 1 Essential Mix debut on 8th Feb 1998, and several sequences mix the same tracks in the same order.
If you like this release and haven't heard The Freestylers Essential Mix, I recommend that you check it out (it's definitely available on both Soundcloud and Mixcloud). -
All time favorite from my street skating age! This was the golden age of electronic music and Bigbeat, breakbeats! It is typicaly upbeat melodies, and joy feeling side of bigbeats! Free sampling pirates! Sampling, sampler skills, no drag and drop, and preset sounds from instruments for producing. Hardware instruments, connected straight to the artist mind and heart, thus to us, listeners! Original and unique small underground movements age. The age where was no marketing industrial parties, no global party movements. More honest music and brave music experiments pioneered and produced like this.

Edited 4 years agoThe first sentence of alasdairhj's previous review sums up this release pretty well.
This is a monster big beat mix, lesser known than "On The Floor at the Boutique" or "Brother's Gonna Work It Out" but it's as good.
Both CDs are tremendous, though I personally have a little more love for the first one where I enjoy every single tune. On the second CD, I can do without the male voice and very cheesy samples of "Sweet Pea" and without "Ooh La La" for which I've never been able to fully enjoy it, especially at the beginning.
The first volume explores hip-hop, b-boy and house universes while the second CD features funkier breaks, danceable big beat as well as some drum and bass with the four last songs.
I was pleasantly surprised the first time I listened to the remix of "Magic's Wand", to note that it sounds very similar to the choon "Planet Boogie" by Cut And Paste, in which one half of Freestylers (Matt Cantor) was part of. "Planet Boogie" came out in 1996 and "Magic's Wand" remix is not credited before 1998 according to Discogs, so is this remix a reprise of "Planet Boogie" ?
I also find the remix of "Policeman Skank" very interesting (more than being dope) as it features a similar bass as the one from Freestylers's jam "Dancehall Vibes", but with a vocalist that sounds more like Navigator than Tenor Fly.
Between this, "We Rock Hard", "Pressure Point", "Rough Technique Vol. 1" and "Electro Science", you will not run out of breakbeat playlists.
Looking by the prices and the small number of copies available, don't wait too long if you want to add it to your collection. -
This is one of the best big beat/breaks albums of all time. It takes you on a journey that you will never forget. The more you listen to this the better it gets. CD1 stars of with old school loveliness and moves to up-tempo breaks. CD2 starts of nicely with freak power and just gets faster and better ending up with Aphrodite and Micky Finn's drum and bass floor filler. It still lives in my CD player years after the release and I can't help but dance every time it comes on. If you can find this rare beauty then you are very lucky, it’s a must have.
