An absolutely legendary electro album. Tracks like Life on MTV, Stock Exchange, You & Us, and Stripper (which feels like an homage to Dopplereffekt's Pornoactress) make this album extremely unmissable. Have listened to this so many times -

Personally I was over the electroclash 'scene' (fashion darlings just couldn't let go of the 'just black' dress code) not long after it started; and not so much has aged well from it's output. Here however, 'First Album' manages to remain as fun as anything from the time, but is largely criminally underrated musically.
Easy to dismiss 'Kitten's dead pan lyrics as nonsense; and/or focus on her spotlight. There's a deeper less obvious meaning behind the smut & porn references (highlighted well by 'arsebucket' below, great name aresebucket I feel like you should have gotten a shout from Kitten on this LP), and, Hacker's music is way beyond throwaway nostalgia.
Best example (& thanks 'madge' for reminding me) is perhaps 'Stock Exchange', a track I'd play in a blink without a care for what year it was made; it's just brilliant & immersive, slick and deceptive; being a good 20ft deeper than it first might appear.
Fan's may want to check Detroit's 'Dopplereffekt' https://discogs.mejorespelis.org/artist/1220-Dopplereffekt for the mid- 90's pre- curser & definite inspiration.
A classic from a throwaway, disposable movement. Perhaps they just did it too well... -

In among all the arch and tongue in cheek lyrics by the wonderful Miss Kittin sits 'You and Us' which lays out wonderfully their 'manifesto' and its quite beautiful
Listen to Miss Kittin and The Hacker's new direction
Driving a car or 303
Giving you a piece of life and energy
Somewhere out in the universe, for a novel
We try to analyze feelings
Thinking about you
Friends, mountains, and party times
I wish you could see us
How we are, how we love and hate
This is what our music is about, you and us
This is what our music is about, you and us
This is what our music is about, you and us
This is what our music is about
Listen to Miss Kittin and The Hacker
Our mind is real, on a cloud
When someone's playing us in a club at night
And we see you smiling on the dance floor
Trying to forget everything
We don't know you
But you are a part of ourselves
And we can look into your eyes
Wherever you are
Because this is what our music is about, you and us
'Cause that is what our music is about, you and us
Listen to Miss Kittin and The Hacker
We take planes, from hotels every weekend
We drive on the highway to other places
Looking at the landscape running behind the window
We are all alone
Listen to something on the stereo
We would like to see skyline
And city lights of New York, or Tokyo
And then come back to the green fields we know
And do nothing! And sleep! And do that again and again
Because, this is what our music is about, you and us
This is what our music is about, you and us
This is what our music is about, you and us -

The definitive electroclash album. Miss Kitten's deadpan delivery has never worked so well as when combined here with the Hacker's glacial synths. Relentlessly cool late 90's techno looks back to an early 80's that never really existed to create a timeless modernity.
