Bob Seger – Smokin' O.P.'S

Sound is not that good. Terrible remastering. MacMherson review is correct. Avoid!

This is a keeper and for Seger fans a gem of a find in his lexicon of hits. This would have been huge in the early days of FM radio when album sides were played, circa 1972.

That record is great, so much raw energy, nothing like the later Bob Seger, nothing is polished here, just great Rock music. The sound is a little too much compressed, but I guess they had to do this, otherwise the needle would jump.

Smokin' O.P's is an excellent album. Short but excellent. It's actually my first time listening to Bob Seger, and going through the album I couldn't help but love the immense amount of soul and feeling put into each piece. Though album is mostly covers, Bob Seger puts enough of himself into the song to essentially own it. The mastering is stellar for a 1960's release with some superb stereo separation of the drums. However, I picked this album up for one song in particular, "Heavy Music," and I was very disappointed in the quality. It appears that they either had a terrible master tape or they just took a very bad record and decided to transfer that to digital. The entire left channel is just filled by the base guitars low frequencies and drowns out the rest of the song, which happens to cower on the right channel under a bed of hisses and pop's. I didn't ask for dubstep lol.

I'm gunna be honest. Buy this album if you want to experience a slice of the 1960's. But for goodness sakes if you looking to get your hands on a nice sounding copy of Heavy Music you're better off scrounging around a second hand record store for a 45.
